Volcano Venture- Hold a rock younger than you!

Experience the newest black sand beach in the world, then walk on, explore inside, learn about and marvel at the life-cycle of Hawaiian volcanoes.
Approximately 6.5 hours duration
Note: This tour does NOT include Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

Hawaii's unique geological history is active and amazing!

Our first destination is Pahoa Village. En route let stories guide your imagination to flow like the lava.

We drive over steel plates on the highway, placed there to span over cracks generated by the 2018 eruption, often steamy from volcanic exhaust.

By taking a hidden, jungle road we arrive at Isaac Hale Park, barely spared by the massive 2018 flows. Impressive 30' still-hot lava walls cross the roads and stretch to the sea, creating the brand-new black sand beach at Pohoiki.

It is here we enjoy a fresh, delicious, seaside picnic lunch.

Witness the geological testimony of the infamous Fissure 8 as we then drive along the newly-reopened Kapoho Road. There, hardened rivers of lava dominate the landscape with eerie scenes.

Returning to the Hilo area, we explore the lava tubes of Kaumana Caves, formed in the Mauna Loa eruption of 1881. Nearby, we visit iconic Rainbow Falls.

Final alohas are shared at the lovely Queen Liliuokalani Park.

Sample Itinerary

NOTE: This tour does not include Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park.

Pick up at your Hilo area lodging, from Hilo Port, or if your party is coming from the Kona side, at a pre-determined rendezvous point.

Drive directly to Pahoa, a charming, “colorful” local village.

Scenic jungle route to Isaac Hale Park to see new lava walls and to stroll along Pohoiki Black Sand Beach.

Seaside picnic lunch.

Drive down the newly-opened section of Kapoho Road (Hwy 132), which travels along the edges of hardened lava rivers from fissure 8.

Head back to Hilo and explore Kaumana Lava Tubes (Note: There are stairs (with railings) at Kaumana Caves and an inclined path over rocky and uneven terrain to enter the lava tubes. Although we take it slow and easy, should a guest decide to remain at the top -where you can still see the lovely entrance to the tubes, there is a very pleasant sitting area to wait while being serenaded by the local birds. Close-toed shoes are required for deeper exploration of the caves.)

We then drive the short distance to visit iconic Rainbow Falls.

We end our day sharing aloha at the lovely Queen Lili'uokalani Park.

Return to your pick-up site.
